I'm 30 yrs of age and I used to workout out all the time at one point... this was about 6 yrs ago. Now I'm about 60lbs over weight and I'm trying to get back into it. I know what I'm supposed to do as far as exercising but I feel as though my body can't handle some the activities I'm trying to do to get back in shape. How do I start exercises such as jogging without it making my back so sore. Because I gotta tell ya, I'm feeling pretty old right now.

Getting Started

Hi Kal-El,

My advice to you is to start with a walking program first before progressing to jogging. Work on your form when you are walking, making sure you're not slouching forward. In addition, incorporate a balance strength training program into your routine that targets every muscle group including core work & stretching. The strength training is a very important component to your weight loss program as well as improving your posture and form. It is also very important for you to stretch your hamstrings, calves, & lower back every time after a walk.

In a nutshell, here's a sample routine to get started:

Walk & Stretch,
Strength Training & Stretch

Hope this helps!

Getting Back in Shape

Kal-El,

Your body is at a different point than it was 6 years ago, so you wouldn't want to go into the same activities at the same level you did before. It's important to establish a solid foundation for your body, first, before placing additional stressors on it.

I would recommend flexibility, core (abs, low back, hips) strength, and balance stabilization exercises first before moving to the more advanced moves such as jogging.

Each person has individual physical abilities and limitations. It's important to be aware of yours so that you will know that the exercises you are doing are effective and not harmful.

Hope this helps, and good luck! Keep us posted on your progress.
