exercise
I recently came back from Boston where I participated in a 3 day 60 mile walk. I am proud to say that I walked all 60, no cheating, no riding the bus, no using the shuttle, and it was not as hard as I thought it would be.
My new Goal now is to RUN the susan G komen race for the cure 5K in october.
Here is my problem. I have athletic asthma.
For the past two weeks I have been running 1/3 of my workout (1.5 miles) and then power walking the rest.
I am already VERY proud that I can run a 12 minute mile (actually several, just not all in a row, I alternate run/walk etc, but I can run 12 minutes at 5mph 3 times if I alternate with 1/3 mile of walking to catch my breath)
I have never been able to do this before in my entire life, even when I was a teenager.
What is the best way to increase my running ability? I have medication, but I still get short of breath. I do better running outside than indoors. I have NEVER been a runner, and would really love to make it happen in 10 weeks. Completing a 5K run (even if it's slow) would be a HUGE accomplishment for me.
Thanks in advance.

try to get as much of the run in as you can and then walk, run, walk, run, walk etc for about fifty minutes and slowly start to cut down the time you spend walking and add more time running. eventually you should be able to build the endurance to make it through the full run. awesome goal by the way and good luck with that! let us know how it goes! George Tabares Fit. Spec./MT A 60 mile walk is one of those things most of us never imagine completing. With asthma it can be an obstacle but one that can be conquered. It looks like you are on the right track to reaching your next goal. |
omega 3's anti-inflammatory benefits for asthma
hi emma,
congrats on the 60 mile walk. wow!
you may want to look into the potential benefits of increasing omega 3's in your diet. i've seen studies showing the benefit of omega 3's for kids with asthma and because asthma is a manifestation of inflammation, omega 3's are known to be antiinflammatory in humans of all ages. here's a good page for more info to get you started. peoples pharmacy sells a very high quality omega 3 from pharmax called, 'finest purest fish oil'. http://www.whfoods.com/genpage.php?tname=nutrient&dbid=84
