Hi, I have always heard that aerobic activity is best for weight loss but some people I know say that in fact it is weight lifting that helps build muscle and rev up your metabolism. So which is it!!??

Weight Training vs Cardio

You need both for weight loss. Cardio will help you shed the stored fat & as you become more conditioned,'fit' , doing more cardio overtime, be it walking, biking, swimming etc, the mitochondria(a small round or rod-shaped body that is found in the cytoplasm of most cells and produces enzymes for the metabolic conversion of food to energy) becomes larger and you'll be able to burn energy more efficiently, even at rest.

As for Weight Training, you'll need it to 'Keep Off' fat & Keep It Off. Lifting weights gives you a metabolic spike for up to an hour after a workout because those hard working muscles need energy to recover. Further, weight training helps change your body mass ratio. What this means is, when you lift, you'll increase lean body mass & lean body mass requires energy to sustain. Muscle takes more energy to maintain.

Aerobic vs Anaerobic

The answer is “both burn!” Cardiovascular exercise primarily uses fat as fuel. Aerobics might not burn as many calories per minute but can be done daily which, provides consistent calorie consumption. Anaerobic exercise uses a large percentage of calories from carbohydrates. Anaerobics such as weight training definitely burn more per minute, but should have a few days off per week to allow for muscle cell recovery. The lesson here is to find a balance between the two and compliment this with consistently sound nutrition.George Tabares Fit. Spec./MT
